mineral make-up

You may have come across the term mineral make-up in magazines, beauty blogs or seen them at cosmetic stores. If you are wondering what it is and how it is different from conventional make-up, we give you the answers.

What is mineral make-up?

Mineral make-up consists of finely powdered particles of iron oxide, zinc oxide and titanium oxide. These are absorbed in to your skin when you apply it on your face and in turn give it a natural radiance. This kind of make-up is very light and is good for everyday wear as it does not look cakey or too made-up on your face. The zinc oxide in it protects your skin from acne and rashes while the titanium oxides provide sun protection. But note that if you are going to be out in the sun for long then it is not a replacement of your sunscreen; you will still need to apply a layer of it before you dab mineral powder or foundation on your face. But in case you are in a hurry and forget to apply it, your make-up will provide some protection. (Read: Madonna’s and Anne Hathaway’s beauty secrets)

Excellent for sensitive skin

Another good thing about mineral make-up is that it is free of oils, preservatives, synthetic dyes and paraben. This takes it a notch higher than conventional make-up. What is best about it is that it can be used by people who have very sensitive skin and are allergic to cosmetics and preservatives. Since it is made of minerals, it will not irritate the skin and people who could not apply make-up due to this reason can take advantage of it.

Suits oily skin

It is also useful for people who have oily skin. This is because, it helps in absorbing excess oil and since it stays on your skin for long, it does not give you the sticky look which you often notice after a few hours of applying cosmetics. You don’t really have to reapply it as your face will look fresh throughout the day. For an added effect, you could apply a primer to even out the skin tone and then dab some loose mineral powder. It will blend well, giving a very natural, fresh look. (Read: Simple tips to manage oily skin)

People with other skin types can also use it as the minerals will only do good to your skin and since it has less preservatives than other cosmetics, it will be a good switch.

How to use

The first step before you begin applying make-up is to moisturise your skin. Use a good sunscreen to protect it from UVB and UVA rays which also moisturises your skin at the same time. Wait for a few minutes for it to get absorbed in your skin. Now, apply a primer on your face and neck (this step is optional but will give you a better finished look). Next, apply some mineral compact powder and then opt for mineral powder. Use a good brush or sponge to blend it evenly in to your skin. You can also opt for a mineral foundation if you are going out for a party in the evening. If you have oily skin, you can skip the foundation and compact and only apply the powder. Dab on some lipstick, blush and eye shadow if you want and you are all set to go out. Various cosmetic brands have a mineral make-up range these days so give it a try and find something that matches your skin tone. (Read: Make-up tips to look picture-perfect)
